How to Prepare Your Boiler for Winter

Preparing your boiler for winter months can be essential to keep your hot water and central heating running efficiently. The best way to protect your home and your family from boiler faults is to make sure you take good care of your boiler. But how do you prepare your boiler for winter? Well, there are a few things you can do, such as:

Have a good look at your boiler

While we would always recommend getting a formal annual boiler inspection by a qualified Gas Safe engineer, you should also not be afraid to have a look at your boiler for yourself. Look for things like damage, cracks, rusting, and overheating. If you have see puddles underneath the boiler make sure there are no leaks and if there are, get a registered engineer out as soon as possible.

Check the boiler pressure gauge

Somewhere on your boiler will be a pressure gauge showing how much pressure is in your central heating system. This gauge usually consists of a dial and various coloured segments (red and green) signifying safe operating levels. Make sure the needle on the dial is square in the middle of the green part of the gauge. If it is below this, check your manual for how you can re-pressurise the system. If it is too high, check the manual for details of how to vent it.

Make sure your radiators are working properly

When your central heating system sits idly over a few months (like in summer) it can cause air to build up in the system which will then sit in the radiators. When the system is then turned back on, you may find that it doesn’t run efficiently or that some radiators fail to get warm. Luckily this problem is easy to resolve with a quick bleed of the radiators in question. Using a radiator key, turn the valve on the top end of the radiator and listen for air coming out. If the hiss lasts longer than a second, you have too much air on your system. Once the air is expelled, water will begin to exit the valve. This is the point where you tighten it back up

Get your boiler serviced by a Gas Safe engineer

All boilers should be checked by a Gas Safe engineer once a year, normally at the beginning of the colder months to ensure it is working efficiently. Boiler inspections are not free, but they will ensure that there are no problems or safety issues with your boiler as well as checking for leaks and efficiency issues.

Insulate your pipes

During cold months, pipes can become cold and freeze. A good way to prevent this from happening is to insulate them with a wraparound lagging material that can easily be bought from your local hardware or DIY shop.

Don’t leave your property unoccupied for lengths of time

Boilers that are switched off for lengthy periods of time can find it difficult to switch back on when required, especially if it is colder when you return. If you do need to vacate your property for a period of time, think about leaving your heating and hot water on for at least a small part of the day to keep it running smoothly.
