A leaking boiler can be worrying and knowing how to fix it can lead to even more stress. But what do you do to fix it? Let us help you out with our guide on what you can do when your boiler develops a leak:

Ring an engineer

One of the first things you should do in the event of any leak with your boiler is to call a registered Gas Safe engineer to come out and look at the problem. If you have Boiler Cover , ring your provider and explain to them the problem. They should be able to arrange for a qualified engineer to visit your property within a few hours in most cases. Don’t try tackling the source of the leak yourself as this can (and does) often make matters worse.

Turn off your water supply

As soon as you realise there is a leak with your boiler turn off your water supply. This will prevent further damage to your boiler and your property and allow you to mop up any water that has already been expelled from the appliance.

Why is my boiler leaking?

There are many different problems that can cause your boiler to start leaking, including:

  • A fault in the boiler’s pressure valve. A leak from your pressure valve can be a sign that pressure within your boiler is too high. Check your pressure gauge and consult your manual to see how to vent your system.
  • Corrosion in the boiler. Any copper pipes can corrode over time and eventually lead to instability in the pipes that can cause leaks. If this is the cause of your leak the only option you have is to get a Gas Safe engineer out to fix the problem.
  • Faulty pump seal. The pump in your boiler sends hot water around your central heating system. Around the pump is a rubber seal to prevent water escaping. If this becomes faulty, water may begin to leak. Again, this problem will need a qualified engineer to fix.
