What actually counts as a household emergency?

Most insurers define household emergencies differently, but we try to stay clear in our message and define the following situations as emergencies:

“Something that happens in your home that is sudden or unexpected and that, if not dealt with, could expose you, your family, or any other third party (friends, neighbours, etc.) to a risk to health and wellbeing, make the property unsafe or insecure or possibly cause more damage to the contents of the property or the property itself. We also count issues that leave you without the use of a Mains service as a household emergency.”

Still not sure what a household emergency is? Then here are a few examples to help you out:

  • Something that makes your home become uninhabitable for a period of time.
  • Something that causes or could cause permanent damage to your property.
  • Something that could put your health or wellbeing at risk.
  • Something that makes your home become unsafe.

In general terms, this means a total loss of service, not a fault to a service. For example, your boiler completely breaking down would prevent your central heating service from working and would be covered, whereas low water pressure would not stop your water supply from working so wouldn’t.

What does a Home Emergency Insurance policy cover?

We offer a wide range of policies at different price points depending on your needs and the level of cover required. Depending on the policy you choose, your home could be protected in the following circumstances:

  • Boiler breakdown cover
  • Central heating failures
  • Radiator problems and leaks
  • Up to £1000 per claim
  • 247 customer helpline
  • Problems with your hot water supply
  • Issues with plumbing
  • Burst and leaking water pipes
  • Blocked drains and pipes
  • Damage or failure to underground sewers or drains.
  • £250 hotel accommodation
  • Failure to fuse boxes and other electrics within the home which you responsible for
  • Failure to your Mains Power Supply to your property that leaves you with no electricity
  • Failure and damage to a toilet or cistern in your property (including failure to the cistern mechanism preventing flushing) so long as it is the only accessible toilet in the property (if you have an alternative you are not covered)
  • Missing tiles on the roof that lead to a leak
  • Issues that prevent access to your home like a broken door lock or lost key
  • Security problems like broken windows or doors
  • Issues arising from vandalism or a break-in where the house needs to be made safe by a contractor
  • Infestations from rodents and other pests that need to be removed by an expert, including rat, mice, and wasp nest problems.

In all cases, we will pay up to a maximum amount as detailed on the emergency cover schedule for any one claim including VAT, call-out charges, labour, parts and materials.

What isn’t covered by home emergency insurance?

While we bring you a great policy, as with all insurance policies, our Home Emergency Insurance has a few exclusions to be aware of, including:

  • Issues with all types of boilers or the central heating system in your house if it has not been installed correctly and maintained as per the manufacturer’s instructions or any statutory regulations that apply to them o if the boiler is over 10 years old.
  • Issues with your mains service where you do not have total loss of service.
  • Dripping taps.
  • Claims made within the first 14 days of the policy.
  • Broken or inoperable toilets if you have another working and accessible one in your property
  • Rodent and pest infestations that are not inside the property, for instance, if they are in gardens, outbuildings (sheds, garages, etc), or any other outside space around the property.
  • Any blocked guttering or guttering that has become misaligned or broken away from the property
  • Damage attributed to vandalism or a break-in if it hasn’t been reported to the police.
  • Failure or damage to any service where the problem originates outside the boundary of the plot or land to which your home is situated on.
  • Any Emergency situation or damage arising from faults, damage or infestation you were aware of at the time you bought the policy. All claims must be for new events, not historic ones.
  • Household appliances like washing machines, fridge freezers and dishwashers (we have great appliance insurance to cover these devices).
  • If you want to see the full list of exclusions, please see our full Terms and Conditions that can be found on our website.

Is there anything I can do to protect my home in the event of an emergency?

The best thing you can do as a homeowner to keep your home protected is to ensure you have adequate Home Emergency Cover, like the type we provide here at Prominence Support. But in some emergencies, a little preparation can help ease the burden of an emergency and lessen the impact until we can get one of our experts out to fix the problem.

Our customer service team will walk you through the steps of how to protect your home when you call us with a problem but let’s have a look at what you can do to combat some of the problems for yourself:

A water leak in your property

If the leak is large you will need an expert to fix it. If it originates from a pipe, turn your water supply off as soon as you can. This will help reduce the amount of damage the water causes. If the leak is coming through a roof, window, or other outside access, grab yourself some buckets and line them up underneath the main flow of water.

Towels can also be used to mop up any excess water and block the flow. Move any personal belongings away from the source of the water (especially electrical ones) and if the water is splashing onto plug sockets, turn off your Mains power supply.

A blocked toilet

A blocked toilet is something you can generally have a go at yourself. All you need is a plunger and a bit of elbow grease. Make sure that the water in the bowl has subsided a little before going to town with the plunger or you’ll splash your nice clean bathroom with… unmentionable stuff, and be wary of putting too many cleaning products down the bowl as the fumes and splashes can be dangerous.

Power outage

If this is caused by a failure to your Mains Power Supply, you are going to need a qualified electrician (which we will provide with our Home Emergency Insurance) to fix the problem if it is your responsibility. We would never recommend that you mess about with your electricity supply. There are a few things you can do in advance to lessen the impact though.

Firstly, make sure you have some torch in your house. This will allow you to see without being able to switch your lights on. Secondly, have some form of battery-powered entertainment for your kids, like a mobile phone or a Nintendo Switch. There’s nothing worse than moaning children when you are in the midst of a crisis.

A broken boiler

Broken Boiler protected by home emergency cover

Okay, you probably aren’t going to be able to fix a broken boiler yourself but there are a couple of things you can do in preparation for the problem. Firstly, make sure you have a couple of electric heaters stored away somewhere in your house. These will come in handy if your central heating packs in.

Secondly, have a store of warm blankets just in case your boiler packs in colder months. Use these to keep warm until the problem is resolved.

Obviously, with one of our Home Emergency policies, you won’t be left in a bind for long and we aim to get a contractor out to you within 2 hours to begin the process of sorting out your problem.

What about if I have to stay away from home during an emergency?

As mentioned above, we will cover you for any hotel accommodation required up to £250 due to your home becoming uninhabitable during your household crisis.

Does a Home Emergency Insurance policy cover my boiler?

The short answer is yes, your boiler is covered in one of our Emergency Insurance policies. We do require that you have maintained it within the parameters of the manufacturer’s guidance, but other than that, we will repair if it develops an issue.

Do I already have a home emergency cover if I have household insurance?

A lot of people assume that home emergency cover is included with their home insurance but, as we mentioned at the top of this article, it very rarely is. If you asked for it when purchasing the policy, it will be. But if not check your terms and conditions or ring your provider to find out.

Even if you do have emergency cover included in your policy, the protection may not be the best and you might get better protection with one of our Home Emergency Insurance policies. Again, check your terms and conditions. Look for gaps and compare it to what we offer. You might be surprised at how much more cover you can get from us.

Will the cost of my policy go up after the first year?

While the financial climate can change quickly and prices for everything change over time, we don’t deliberately offer a low initial monthly fee to then hike prices after a year once you’ve been bought in.

As an insurance company, we are regulated by the FCA and always endeavour to treat our customers fairly. Our pricing plans are simple, fair, and consistent.
