What is a Mains Fuse Box?

Mains fuse boxes have over the years carried a variety of different names, from fuse board to electricity board, but their purpose and design have barely changed. A mains fuse box is essential for your home electrics to operate safely and efficiently. Without one, your electrical devices are prone to power surges and could in extreme circumstance catch fire.

Where is my mains fuse box?

It’s important to know where your mains fuse box is in the event of an emergency. Your mains fuse box is likely to be near the power switch that turns your entire electric supply off when needed. Most mains fuse boxes are found in garages, utility rooms, cellars, or kitchens, although sometimes they can be found under staircases and in cupboards.

When you’ve found your fuse box make sure you keep access to it clear in case you need to get to it in an emergency. There’s nothing worse than falling about in the dark looking for the right fuse to flick when your lights have gone out.

What is found on a mains fuse box?

RCD Switches

RCD stands for Residual Current Devices and these switches turn off the electricity supply to each individual circuit within your house when a potentially dangerous fault is detected. RCD switches are often found in newer fuse boards and replace the old-fashioned electric fuse (more on this in a bit). RCDs save lives. It’s as simple as that. When a power surge or other dangerous electrical event takes place, the switches will automatically flick to the off position.

Electric fuse

Electric fuses are the old-fashioned alternative to RCD switches and circuit breakers. They are made of a metal filament stretched between two contacts. When a power surge or other untoward event happens with your electrics, the filament will burn out, breaking the circuit.

Circuit breakers

Circuit breakers are similar to RCDs and fuses in that they switch of a circuit when an issue is detected.

What does a fuse actually do?

A fuse is a small piece of wire filament that will burn out and break when there is a potential electrical emergency. In systems that use fuse wire, a blown fuse will need to be replaced with another length of wire designed to take the same amperage.

If the fuse board uses circuit breakers, a blown circuit will just flick the breaker to the off position and simply flicking it back to on will turn the circuit back on. It’s important to remember that turning the circuit breaker back on won’t fix the problem that caused it to blow in the first place.

What if my fuse keeps tripping?

If the fuses on your mains fuse box keep tripping it is a sign that something else is happening with the electronics in your home. This could be an issue with your wiring or an actual appliance. Best to have an electrician out to get to the root of the problem.
