How To Fix A Dripping Tap

A dripping tap can be incredibly annoying as well as wasteful of precious water. In the age of water meters, this last fact cannot be overlooked but the added costs of getting a leaking tap repaired can be a stretch too far for many households.

Fixing a dripping tap is actually rather simple if you know what you are doing, but can be fraught with pitfalls that can make matters worse if things go wrong. But never fear because we’re here to help you out. Here’s a little guide on how to fix a dripping tap easily and with little fuss.

Step 1: Put the plug in the sink

Our first tip is to make sure you put the plug into the sink before you take apart your tap. The small screws and parts of the tap are easily lost down a plug hole so make sure it is covered.

Step 2: Make sure you switch off the water at the mains

Don’t make the rookie error of leaving the water supply on. If you do you may have more than a little drip to contend with. If you tap has an isolation valve, then this can be switched off. If not, you may need to turn the entire water supply off at the mains. Once this is done you will need to drain the pipes by running the water supply until there is nothing coming out.

Step 3: Find the screw on top of the tap

There will be a small screw on top of the tap holding it together. It is often located underneath the hot or cold decorative cap. Pop the cap off and loosen the screw. This will allow you to take apart the tap.

Step 4: Take the tap apart

Once the screw is removed the top portions of the tap should come apart relatively easily. Lay all the bits on the side of the sink in the order you removed them.

Step 5: Remove and replace the ceramic disc or rubberised washer

Once the tap is in bits you should be able to see the rubberised washer or ceramic disc that are causing the leak in the first place. Over time these become worn down and water seeps through. Remove the faulty ones and replace them with new ones before putting the tap back together in the reverse order to what you took it apart.
