How to Prepare Your Boiler for Winter
In modern society, it’s incredibly important to make sure you aren’t paying too much for your energy bills and are protected against the worst that can happen. Wasting money on things like gas and electricity is taking cash out of your pocket and putting it into utility companies bank accounts when you could be spending it on things that you enjoy instead and things that will help protect what you own (like boiler cover).
But switching energy suppliers is hard, right? The short answer is, no it’s not. Switching energy supplier for most customers is relatively straightforward, simple and quick and can be completed in as little as 10 minutes via an online form, with the changeover happening within just 2 weeks. In most cases, all you need to do is give your new supplier your details and they will do the hard work for you so you can sit back, relax, and your bank account can enjoy the savings.
What do I need to switch my energy provider?
You will need up to date and comprehensive information about your current energy supplier when you want to switch to a new energy provider. Make sure you have details of the name of your current energy supplier, your full address, and details of your current tariff when filling out application forms to switch.
It’s also a great idea to have some understanding of how much energy you are currently using. Some tariffs are complicated to understand and may have a combination of flat-rate fees and variable rates based on your usage. Knowing how much energy you use on average will give you a platform for comparison and can make it easier to see which tariffs are cheaper for you.
Is using a price comparison website a good idea?
Price comparison services are a good way to understand which providers are the cheapest. They may even offer an online calculator to help you work out how much you will save if you do switch based on the number of people in your household
There are drawbacks to these services, however. The calculators they provide are not always the most accurate and the comparison service may not offer a fully comprehensive list of options as some providers avoid them or favour another site.
Our tip is to check out more than one comparison site and compare the cheapest options combined. This way you are getting a more complete picture of what you can save.
Can I go directly to the suppliers?
Of course. We would always recommend contacting your current supplier before you switch to anyone else. Explain to them that you are thinking about switching and ask them if they have cheaper options. Go in armed with a rough idea of how much you could save elsewhere and don’t be afraid to tell them. You’ll be surprised how many energy providers find a cheaper alternative when confronted in this way.
You can even skip comparison sites altogether if you want and call new suppliers directly. This is obviously a more labour-intensive option but by speaking to a real person, you are guaranteeing the quotes they give are the cheapest they can offer.
What about auto-switching?
Auto-switching is a relatively new way to switch your energy supplier but is fast becoming the quickest and easiest way to save money. Auto-switching services will monitor your tariff and automatically move you to a cheaper option when your contract is up. This makes them a great way to save money with little effort.
What if my energy supplier owes my money?
If you are in credit with your previous provider once your final meter readings have been totalled, they will be obliged to send you a credit for that amount. This can be in the form of a bank transfer or a cheque that will come through the post. If you haven’t received anything within a month of switching over, give your previous provider a call and chase up the payment. If you are not happy with what your previous provider says you always reserve the right to go to the Energy Ombudsmen service.
How much can I save if I switch energy providers?
According to finance experts, you could save on average £300 per year if you switch to the cheapest tariff available to you. This can be even more if you are stuck on one of the older Big Six providers tariffs that haven’t changed in years.
What about the Energy Switch Guarantee?
The Energy Switch Guarantee is a voluntary set of rules that Energy suppliers can sign up to. It is a commitment by them to make the switch over to a new supplier as simple and easy as it can be and to rectify any mistakes as soon as they can with no detriment to the customer.
