My Boiler Is Not Firing Up the Central Heating: What Can I Do?

If your radiators are not getting hot but your boiler is working overtime, you have a problem and probably one that you won’t be able to fix yourself. But understanding what’s causing the problem is half the battle and, in some cases, can allow you to try a few fixes for yourself. This is especially useful if you don’t have some form of Central Heating Insurance. Let’s have a look at a few of the common reasons why your central heating does not heat up even when your boiler is on.

central heating not working

Check your radiator and system thermostats

This may seem like an obvious tip, but sometimes something as simple as a thermostat set too low can be the reason your central heating is not firing up. Check your main thermostat and see if it is set to come on and has a sufficiently high-temperature setting. If this is ok, have a look at your radiator valves. Most will be thermostatic and can be set to come on at specific temperatures. You may have not touched them yourself but somebody in your household could (I’m looking at you kids). If they are set too low turn them up and see if that fixes the issue.

Have a look at your radiators

If your radiators are cold at the top but the bottom (or pipes feeding them) are hot, there is a good chance there is a problem with them. If the valves are switched on completely, it could be that there is air in the radiator. To fix this problem you will need to locate the small valve at the top of the radiator and using a radiator key ‘bleed’ the air from them.

Is the water pressure in the green?

If your water pressure is low, your boiler will be unable to pump hot water around your central heating system. Your boiler should have a pressure gauge on the front and the reading needs to be in the green section. If it is not, consult your boiler manual for details of how to re-pressurise your boiler.
