If your boiler keeps switching itself off it can become irritating and can lead to discomfort for you and your family. But what causes it in the first place and how can you fix it? Without boiler cover, you may be left wondering what options you have. Let’s have a look at some of the reasons that cause this problem and discuss their solution:

Your boiler is overheating

One of the main reasons for your boiler to keep switching itself off is if your boiler is overheating due to poor water flow caused by blockages or sludge, rust, and limescale deposits in the system. The reason the boiler switches off is due to the safety features in the appliance that prevent it from getting too hot and eventually exploding. If overheating is causing your boiler to switch off, you will need an engineer to flush your central heating system.

Low water pressure

Your boiler is designed to switch off in the event that water pressure becomes too low. This is to prevent overheating of water and potential explosions. Your system will have been pressurised correctly when it was first installed but over time may lose pressure. This is especially true if you have had a leak or bled your radiators. Check with your boiler manual for details of how to re-pressurise the system.

Thermostat problems

A faulty or mis-calibrated thermostat can cause your boiler to switch off involuntarily because it may tell it that your house has reached a temperature that it hasn’t. If this is the problem, you will need an engineer to replace the thermostat for a newer one.

Air in the system

Air in the central heating system can cause the boiler to fail to operate. Sometimes air in the radiators and pipework will make a noise as hot water is pumped around it. If you think this is the problem, try bleeding your radiators using a radiator key. If there is more than a second’s worth of air escaping, this is more than likely your problem.
