New Boiler Vs Boiler Repair: Which is Better?
An old boiler is more prone to breaking down. That’s a fact. But even a newer boiler that is constantly failing can cost more money in repairs than it would to replace it. This is especially true if you don’t have something like Boiler Cover to protect you.
So, which is better? Should you buy a new boiler or get your current one repaired? To answer this question, you will need to weigh up many factors, such as:
How old is your boiler?
The most important question you will need to answer if your boiler packs in and you are considering a repair or a replacement is, “How old is my boiler?” Older boilers are prone to failing, more expensive to run, and finding parts to repair them can be difficult. On top of this, an older boiler will be less efficient and will incorporate outdated technology. If any of these things apply to your boiler, it may be worth considering replacing your boiler instead of forking out money for a repair.
The condition of your boiler?
If your boiler is a little battered or performing poorly due to its condition, repairs may only be a temporary fix for your problems. If your boiler is a looking a little worse for wear, get an engineer’s opinion as to whether it is worth saving or if replacing it will be a better option in the long run
Think about how efficient your boiler is
The UK government put regulations in place in 2005 to make sure that any new boiler installed was a highly efficient condensing boiler. Condensing boilers use 2 internal heat exchangers to decrease heat loss within the appliance. Boilers that are older than this may not be of the condensing type and may waste energy and your hard-earned cash over the years.
Even if you do have a newer boiler, you may find that it is not as efficient as it can be. All boilers are rated (like other household appliances) on a scale from A to G based on their efficiency, with A being the best. If your boiler is less than the highest rating, replacing it may save you money in the long run.
Is your current boiler meeting your needs?
You may have a great little boiler that has run fine up until its recent problems. It may be highly efficient and cost very little to run. But does it meet your needs? If you have a bigger house you may need a more powerful appliance to get hot water to your sinks, baths, and radiators and a break down maybe just the prod you need to replace it.
But how do I know if replacing the boiler will be cheaper than repairs in the long run?
The cost of repairs can run into the many hundreds of pounds, but the cost of a replacement boiler can be thousands. Energy bills for older inefficient boilers can be quite high but does it justify buying a new one? It depends. Plumbers charge upwards of £50 per hour (in weekdays – more at weekends) and parts can cost even more. If your boiler is breaking down frequently or is just too old to repair, a new one will save you money in the long run.
